Quinta Monteiro de Matos

Founded in the 1950’s, Quinta Monteiro de Matos is a family-owned winery, with the 3rd generation of the family currently running all aspects of production and business. The vineyards are located in the Bairro area and more specifically the Santarem subregion of the Tejo Region of Portugal. These highlands are comprised of rolling hills and sweeping plains rich with limestone and clay soils, as well as patches of schist that allow and encourage the vines to establish deeper roots. Viticulture has deep roots in Tejo and is well known as one of the oldest wine producing regions in the country as vineyards have thrived on the banks of the Tejo River since Roman times. The Tejo River has defined the landscape, climate and economy for centuries, and can be credited for shaping the distinct terroirs found across the region, making the surrounding plains and riverbanks an ideal terrain to cultivate native grapes in Portugal. The combination of culture and history with modern and innovating winemaking techniques make the Monteiro de Matos wines exciting and unique.
